SPECULATIVE ECOLOGIES
2025
Ecologicas Especulativas is a research residency programme with LABVERDE in Manaus, Brazil, at the Adolpho Ducke Reserve.
The core of the recording and compositional fieldwork is the use of a coil microphone to trace electrical frequencies from an energy tower into the depths of the forest, demonstrating how infrastructure extends far beyond its visible boundaries. These signals persist within the environment, embedded in the same space as animal life, water systems, and microbial activity.
The piece also holds a stark contrast between life and loss: recordings from the living river sit alongside those from the flooded forest at Balbina Dam, where submerged trees continue to stand in states of decay. Contact microphones and hydrophones capture these differences materially, rather than metaphorically, presenting distinct conditions of vitality and decomposition within the same ecosystem.
The piece is defined by its commitment to recording the environment on its own terms. By working across multiple sensing technologies, the composition expands what can be heard and understood as part of an ecosystem. It challenges simplified or romanticised ideas of the rainforest, instead presenting it as a site of overlapping temporalities, tensions, and transformations.

Curated by Kay Nystagmus
This multi-channel installation and composition was created using live recordings of traditional Armenian instrumentsL Qanun (Mar Margaryan), Qamancha (Ashot Ghazaryan), and Duduk/Zurna (Hayk Karoyi), alongside electronic synthesis and field recordings captured at the Orgov Telescopic Observatory.

The work blurs boundaries between organic and electronic sound, invoking the hypnotic and ritualistic qualities of Terteryan’s compositions, following the three movements in the original score that was digitised for the first time for ‘Notations’.
